Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the top three causes of hepatocellular carcinoma, i.e., liver cancer. This case study presents gross and microscopic findings typical of a person with suspected NAFLD. During cadaveric dissection of a 52-year-old Caucasian female, whose cause of death was listed as cardiopulmonary arrest, a visual examination revealed a pale-colored liver. (Livers found in most cadavers are a dark red/brown color.) Samples were collected and processed for histologic examination. The demographics, causes, pathophysiology and treatment options for NAFLD are discussed.
