Drug-induced liver injury (DILI), although rare, is the leading cause of acute liver failure and has been associated with a variety of medications. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) DILI Database Project established new approaches to identify DILI events within the VHA populations. The purpose of this study was to utilize those approaches to assess DILI incidence associated with sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ/TMP), a commonly prescribed antibiotic. Additionally, disparities in risk regarding to age, gender, and race/ethnicity were evaluated. A better understanding of risk disparities for SMZ/TMP will allow for more informed prescribing decisions and monitoring for future patients.
